Why buy a ROLA hand built amp
90% Australian components, chassis, cab, panels, Valves and parts 100% made by hand in Australia,
I support and source where I can from all Australian companies and manufacturers and keep jobs here.
Most measure 45 watts RMS into 8 ohms at 1% distortion around 50 watts RMS at Clipping
This is not a 30W kit version of the JTM-45
The only production JTM45 in the world that uses mostly period correct vintage 50s and 60s parts
The only output transformer in the world that uses 20% vintage radiometal core material (this is how the amp gets its creamy natural compression at saturation)
The only output transformer in the world to use 200v insulation winding wire (more wire in the window lets me use more copper for an improved output transformer)
The amplifier is wired using silver Tefzel aviation grade Teflon hookup wire (high temperature long life does not deteriorate with age even over 20 years) Hand made solid 24ct gold and Teflon wire an option add $120
All point to point wiring using hand made Bakelite Turrett boards and gold plated brass pins (all components are rigidly mechanically secured so parts dont fall off with vibration and shipping, unlike PCBs)
High grade milled pin gold CMC valve sockets (the best available in the world and hand assembled in Australia)
Studio grade ALPS A2 conductive plastic faders as used in top line studio mixing consoles and the best audiophile amplifiers
Most resistors are NOS 50s 60s 70s vintage from IRH, DUCOHM (our own Rola / Plessey made resistors), Philips (all Australian made) or vintage 50s ERIE (England) - see photo gallery.
Semco NOS 70s silver dipped Ruby Mica caps (great sonics)
HT electrolytics are new stock low ESR (for long life, stability, and broadband bypassing qualities)
Sockets are new stock CMC machined pin, NOS McMurdo vintage 50s (as were used in the original Marshall 1962 chassis) on request available for no extra charge for those who may want a bit more 60s authenticity.
High grade Allen Bradley pot for bias adjustment
Vintage Hammertone grey NC punched chassis
Now used standard rack capture nuts and industrial grade 6mm bolts to hold chassis in cab.
High build quality, built for long service not a few years like modern PCB amps
Great value for money (military long life NOS valves included in each amp)
All Australian build from local components
Unbeatable sound qualities

Here it is my latest creation the famous JTM45 KT66 version, all hand wired point to point on turret boards as shown in the photos, comes complete enclosed as shown with cab. Unlike modern mass produced amps full of dry joints and mechanical reliability issues this amp is built using traditional 50s wiring not a printed circuit board in sight, hand laced wiring, every component tied off on the turret board before being soldered, dynamic matched and demagnetised valves, lots of NOS valve options for customers to audition before purchase and more. Each one of these amps takes 40 hours to build (including cab), I will never get rich building them but it sure is rewarding and after 50 years of building valve amps I still get a kick out of every one I build going to a good home.
The output transformer is custom wound and uses 20% radiometal core material so it naturally compresses instead of clipping like modern ones, this is the way 1950s output transformers behaved. You cant go out and buy radiometal as it has not been produced for nearly 60 years, it can only be recycled from 1940s and 1950s transformers and then new GOSS core hydrocut to the same dimensions, the net result is an output transformer about twice the size of modern ones (just look at the photos most 30w output transformers are 1/2 to 1/3rd this size) each output transformer weighs around 5.5 pounds (2.5kg). I uses a heavy duty 5as4 rectifier and a quality filter choke in the power supply. Output impedance is selectable for 4,8,16 ohms and if you want to use a couple of odd impedance cabs let me know as I hand make the output transformers and can wire speaker sockets to suit any weird combination you may have. Each output transformer takes about 1 1/2 days to make, and I can custom design any variants you may wish such as ultralinear, different impedances etc.
Amps are built using RF grade Semco silver mica 70s capacitors made from now totally unavailable Ruby Mica, each one silver dipped and epoxy coated, each capacitor installed with care ensuring the orientation to minimise noise and circuit coupling. IRH Australia vintage 50s carbon composition resistors (precision German made Byscfhlag or Rhoderstein metal film where IRH values are not available), Gold plated input sockets (plated here in Australia with 2.5 microns gold), Bakelite knobs with allen head grub screws, hand made gold pin turret boards, silver Teflon (Aviation grade Tefzel) hookup wire, Plexi front and rear panels reverse silk screened and reverse coated in gold paint like the originals, not a low cost laser engraved panel. Unlike todays production amps using PCBs designed to last only 3 years, these amps are hand built to last 10 years. All amps are wired as they were made in the 50s and 60s, on a solid punched aluminium chassis with TIG welded corners something that cheap imports and kit amps do not do. The amp cab is made from ply, with a high quality non covered version using Australian solid timbers an option. I only use 60/40 tin lead solder as specified in military contracts, I do not use lead free which will crystalize within 3 or so years.
The head comes complete with a full 12 month RTB (Adelaide) warranty (you need to get it here and back), and after warranty support and advice even if it does not directly relate to a purchase. the amp includes 3 x Mullard ECC81s made at Philips Hendon South Australia, Semco silver mica plate coupling caps Other options , A/B footswitch, different speaker impedance, EQ frequencies optimised for Gibsons (Fender EQ on request or front panel switchable), other NOS valves and more, just ask I am always happy to quote and discuss any changes.
POWER TRANSFORMERS - IMPORTANT PLEASE READ
As my amps use all Australian made components, the power transformer supplied in all of my amps use static shields between the primary and secondary windings to be compliant with SAA wiring rules and Australian standards. Most imported amplifiers and imported kits on the market do not have a static shield or meet the Australian safety standards. The static shield is a layer of copper sheet the width of the E leg of a power transformer, if there is an internal short or transformer failure the 240 live mains will not go to the secondary and high voltage windings potentially killing someone. If there are any static sheild currents Earth leakage protectors will trip this is an important safety feature. If you use any equipment that does not meet Australian standards and there is a problem, insurance companies my walk away from any claim and you may be personally liable.
ALL TUBE POWER SCALING OPTION (allows output stage power to be continuously varied anywhere from 45 watts RMS to brown sounds (1 watt or less)
After a lot of R&D with the Black-Note JTM-45 one of the options I looked at in the AMP BAT CAVE was power scaling of the output stage and preamp. A set of the most highly regarded London power scaling kits were ordered and evaluated along with many other circuits, what resulted at the end of the day was an all Valve power scaling series regulator circuit. The solid state ones worked fine abut needed some extra work to get the bias supples to track properly, the downside was that they all effected the power supply sag of the JTM-45 and so did not offer the best Sonics , this is to be expected when using any thing solid state in an all valve vintage 60s amp. My final solution was to replace the valve rectifier with a 6AS7 twin triode series regulator valve, and build a variable power supply into the amp, using the 6AS7 as a rectifier as well as a regulator. This needs an additional power transformer for the amp to support the power scaling option. Two different power scaling options were tested giving a total of 4 combinations, these were one for the main power amplifier and a separate one for the preamp circuits. The effect of power scaling on the preamp is questionable in practice, but one amp tester actually liked the result and would add it to an amp build, the preamp power scaling regulator uses a single 6AV6 triode valve , all testers gave the main output stage power scaling the thumbs up. Every amp tester could easily identify the solid state power scaler circuits, and the all valve one in a blind listening test, none would install a solid state one in preference and all preferred the sound of triode regulators to pentode regulators.
The additional cost to add the all valve power scaling circuit is $600
Comments from my customers (unedited)
Customer #1 (blues & rockabilly player January 2013)
Had a little play on JTM 45 Graham. Lovely amp-beautifully built- great clarity & crispness with Gibson 335.
Its an amp you like right from the start. I noticed the extra warmth from the normal input & I could live with that but both channels are great.
The power is awesome. -it sounds like 50 W or more through the quad box. I think the 2xG30H speakers are keeping it honest since they dont break up
like the 2 Greenbacks they are paired with. The sound is musical in quality which you only get from the best amps in my view.
Great sensitivity where you can control the sound from the picking hand (fingers in my case).
Very Fender like with the quality of the clean tones & trebly overtones but without that searing treble you get from silverface Twins.
Yep, the KT 66s give it a distinct quality from my Bassman but I can tell they are related - first cousins.
Its a work of art in its own right. Would be interesting to couple it with my Celestion Blues in the Vox - the KT66s seem to be made for the Blues.
From customer #2 (60s 70s rock n roll)
I noticed from playing with the amp that the high treble 1 input has that natural gain/breakup without pushing the Volume - subtle but its there, which can be rolled off from the guitar volume control if required. The KT66s definitely have a shimmering quality and the amp has enough controls to shape the sound desired. Someone once said the JTM45 is a good all round amp & I would agree with that, ie anything from country to rockabilly to rock n roll & blues. Sounds great with my quad. Build quality is outstanding and makes all current re-issues I have seen using printed boards very sad indeed, the KT66s are just magic.
Customer #3 (JB well known Adelaide guitarist)
Just picked my amp up today and want you to know I cant put it down the sonic qualities of this amp are fantastic, the custom output transformer using radio metal and the KT66s just sing in over 50 years of playing I have never heard an amp like this in my life before, this is a keeper. Graham was kind enough to pull the chassis out of the cab for me to have a look at the wiring under chassis, being technically minded myself and having built a few amps before I can tell you this exceeds in quality any build I have ever seen well beyond anything I could ever achieve. What you see in the Ebay photos is the same quality as my amp build.
A big comment, man you are the KING of the KT66s
Customer number 4 (Qld)
Got the amp Graham - its great, I really like it so far. Great sound
and really makes me want to riff out. Has a nice range and clarity -The
plywood box and bubble wrap packaging were awesome, it arrived in tip
top shape.
Customer number 9, NOS tube options as listed here for number 10 (NSW)
Hi Graham , another day of bliss, the sound Is incredible ,
lo input ch 1 is where its at for me . The ringing In my ears are continuous because
its so bloody loud but all worth it !!!!
Amp number 10
Hi Graham ,
Amazing amp thats all I can say , that sound is what rock n roll is all about , I love it I couldnt praise it enough . Cheers
Amp number 15
The tones Im getting are incredible ,with a little tweaking I found a sweet spot coupled with my barefoot fuzz set more for as a boost with a little dirt sounds amazing plus allowing myself to play at lower volumes ( still loud) Im
Getting that Ian miss vibe happening , it cant be matched by anything I love this sh!!
amp number 16
Hey Graham.
Just wanted to let you know I got the amp this morning, and I havent been able to stop playing it.
The first thing that struck me was how great it looks. Like I told you before, I own a Marshall 1987x,
an English made 50 watt plexi reissue, and the JTM45 makes the Marshall look like a cheap Chinese copy!!
The small details like the plexi panels, quality vinyl, gold piping and knobs define it as a true handmade piece.
Amp number 27
Ive owned 13-14 amps in the last 20 years including the Marshall reissue Offset JTM45 and the Dr Z Route 66.
Your amp smokes them both!! It has remarkable compression and note clarity but also a warm touch that
pedals absolutely love.
The master volume mod is phenomenal. Finally, an amp that has remarkable tone at any volume.
Amp number 33
Channel switching mod works a treat, great sound, great build, happy Vegemite
Amp number 37
Had to drop you a line this is the first amp I have ever owned that I just plugged it in with all controls in the flat position and got great sounds without having to fiddle to find them. The bright channel just breaks up like a dream, Im an old bloke in my 60s not in a band anymore but have a monthly jam session with old mates, when they heard the amp they were all gob smacked, could not believe the clarity and control the amp gives my playing, with the 335 the JTM just loves both pickups, man this is unbeatable. Attention to details and quality of build are beyond this world. Happy to recommend this amp to anyone BTW my bass player wants one and will be in contact.
Amp number 38
F!!!!!!!!! this amp rocks, played at the GOV last month, your JTM just cuts through their 10KW front of house PA, the sound guy wanted to put baffles in front of me to shut me up !!, they should let the band balance ourselves and just concentrate on vocals. Who needs a bank of Marshal quad boxes, one will do. Great job really appreciate this as the best Australian made amp I have ever seen or heard.
Amp number 42
Hi Graham, love the amp ! Beautiful bell like tones, projection, warmth and lots of natural sustain. Its the clean channel I play through Teles,Gretsch and a Les Paul for slide.
Amp number 43 (the current GOLD on GOLD build)
I thought Id heard it all and i have played lots of other amps before but this is another level. The build qualities are fantastic with great
attention to detail -this is how ALL amps should be made IMO. This amp is a steal for the price too with all the NOS parts you used.
Thanks Graham and Im sure i will own more ROLAs in the future
Amp number 44 (the current GOLD on GOLD build)
I have finally got a to have a good play on my Rola JTM 45 MKII. To described this amp is one word would be "MAGIC!"
I have played in bands for over twenty five years and i can honestly say i have never played an amp head like this.
The words i will use to describe the tones are : Sweet, creamy, warm, full & harmonically beautiful! .....you end up just playing any riff just
listen to the tones, hour upon hour.
Amp number 52
The best JTM45 in the World if you ask me!..Brilliant!..Thanks Graham!
Amp number 64 (Febraury 2016)
Amp arrived. Had to supply US customs with my social security number. It cleared customs. They opened the amp and resealed it. Everything is fine. The sound is amazing at any power setting. I am running a 2x12 with a 1973 g30h 75Hz and a WHS Blackhawk 50. The power scaling is where it is at. This is something I will not part with. I do not feel that way about many things. I am part of a small group lucky enough to have one of Grahams amps.
Amp number 68 (April 2016)
Borrowed the demo unit, being a bass/double bass player expected it to need a lot of tweaking -------- wrong !!!!! it gave fantastic sounds out of the box no tweaking or pot fiddling needed, my 500 watt class D is now a backup amp at best, possibly a boat anchor. I completely forgot how a decent valve amp sounds especially with the double bass or the Fender precision bass,.
Amp number 72 (May 2016)
Graham did a build for me - 3 weeks wait, unboxed it and just fantastic from the go, had a deep switch added, double bass just sings, fan bloody tastic. These amps are too good for lead and rhythm players, and a heck of a lot cleaner than my 59 bassman. Brilliant 11 out of 10 very happy camper.
Amp number 78 June 2016
Hi Graham. Got my new Rola amp from you on Friday and it sounds amazing. Im running the JTM with the channels jumped through a Mesa 212 cabinet with the impedance set at 8. Again, this thing is the best amp Ive ever heard!!
Amp number 86 December 2017
I’ve spent some time with it now and I must say, I’m astounded every time I plug into it. The clean sound sparkles yet has real authority and the distortion is everything that I expected. Plugged into a 2 x 12 with American voiced alnico speakers and the mids at 3 - 4, it sounds like a bigger, better version of a vintage Fender, the crunch sound is pure vintage Marshall. This is a very versatile instrument in its own right.
Amp number 88 January 2017
Thanks for the JTM. I have been grinning from ear to ear since the first note.
The amp has deep and profound qualities I never anticipated!
shipping
The amp will come crated and packed in a custom timber box to ensure no shipping damage. all shipping by air road express or your own courier, local pickup is OK as well, If you live in Adelaide I have one of these available for you to audition, or if you want to talk some more about the amp just call me on 0414323099.
What goes on in the Valve amp Batcave
I am in Coromandel Valley SA, as each customer requires changes and modifications each amp is built to order here in my workshop, I do have a demo amp here and if you live in Adelaide I can show you what I do and give you the workshop tour. Yes NOS parts are getting hard to source I currently only have enough 50s resistors (about 700,000 in stock) which is why I now use NOS ERIE UK resistors as well as IRH Australian ones, there is stock to make another 500 JTM-45s including the NOS valves (23,000 left) to go with them.
Then I will be into 60s resistors (Philips made at Hendon SA) here I am down to my last 5 million of them. NOS Semco caps about 10,000 left. NOS 80s German resistors about 60 million left. While this may sound a lot of stock it is finite and my QC usually will discard 50% not for use in the JTM-45 and plexis. From the discarded 50% I get 20% useful that I use in the smaller amp builds, the remainder binned.
Re sonic QC and voicing of these amps, each one is built to a technical standard and a full set of computer controlled tests made using my HP audio test set. Once an amp passes these tests it is voiced with minor component changes usually the tone stack driver cathode load resistor, the phase splitter load resistors (to make sure of symmetry in each grid drive) and the feedback capacitor and resistor in the presence control.
Valves are each hand selected (after being batch tested by a computer valve anyliser before going into stock, getters re-fired in an RF oven an then demagnetised in a Weircliff bulk eraser) V1 is selected as having the least heater cathode leakage (noise), V2 and V3 both selected to have their anode voltages as close to 1/2 VCC as possible and phase splitter anode voltages to be within 1-2 volts of each other differential. Output valves to make sure of a dynamically matched pair and operating on the right part of the curve, to provide optimum performance of the output transformer saturation, this is easily done by unsoldering G1 of V4 and jumping it to G1 of V5 and then measure the differential distortion with a frequency and level sweep.
Each amp is sonically tested with a wave player and guitar tracks I lifted from my Studer A80 8 track multitrack analog recordings, I made as an engineer back in the 70s. Burn-in is about 3 hours on my workshop bench just playing some favourite background music. Once every 3 months I check the sonics of my current build alongside my reference Dudley Craven built prototype from the 1950s for consistency, to make sure current builds are the same today as 5 years ago.
