USED JHS PEDALS FIREFLY FUZZ PEDAL
When it comes to germanium devices, its no secret that the British had it all figured out. There werent many germanium-equipped pedals made outside of Great Britain in germaniums heyday—the Fuzz Face, Rangemaster and Zonk Machine come to mind. But of all the germanium devices, there is perhaps none greater than the Tone Bender.
The first Tone Benders were built by Gary Hurst and sold through Macaris Musical Instruments shops in 1965. During this time, the Tone Bender saw a myriad of revisions. The original is known as MKI, then MKII and the Professional MKIII. There was also a transitional model known now as the MK1.5.
It is a MKIII Professional that is the source of the inspiration behind the JHS Firefly. Using three new-old-stock matched Tungsram AC128 transistors, the Firefly captures the essence of British fuzz innovation.
Usually adorned with three knobs—Volume, Tone and Fuzz—the Firefly has an extra knob for Bias. This control dictates how much voltage the transistors see, and the transistors act accordingly. Some old fuzzboxes have transistors with wildly varying gains, and a solid 10k resistor across the board simply wont cut it. This is why some people talk about "good ones." Some transistor and resistor combinations just sound sweeter. With the Bias knob available on the face of the pedal, every Firefly is a "good one."
The sound of the Firefly is second to none in the germanium fuzz realm. Unlike most germanium fuzzes of the germanium era, the Firefly has plenty of volume on tap. Old fuzzes needed to be cranked all the way before becoming usable, but the Firefly does not play by this rule. Unity is far before maximum, so that the Firefly can be used as a boost as well to really cut through the mix.The Firefly is also equipped with an internal voltage converter, so that the pedal can be chained with negative-ground effects just as one would chain any other pedal. There are no strange rules or guessing games with the Firefly—plug in and take flight.
Each Firefly is wired for true bypass and is powered by a 2.1mm center-negative Boss-style power adapter.
