“The touch response of the Z Wreck is unequaled. Does the Z Wreck ROCK? YES!!! Does the Z Wreck TWANG? YES!!! The Z Wreck will deliver exactly what your hands and guitar give it.” – Dr. Z
General InformationStarting in 2006 Brad Paisley contacted Dr Z about building another amp. After talking about the design and the desired outcome Z asked his friend Ken Fischer to lend a hand. Dr Z built up the prototype amp and sent it off to Ken. Ken did his thing to it and sent it back…including naming the amp the Z Wreck. After a few more tweaks the amp was sent off to Brad and it has become a mainstay in his rig since 2006. When Ken passed away at the end of ‘06 Dr Z put the amp on a shelf and walked away.Over the past few years the Z Wreck was mentioned by Brad in various interviews and appeared on a few TV shows and of course quite a few album tracks. Dr Z got numerous requests to put the amp into production, but always declined. Fast forward to May 5th 2010 and the Nashville flood. Brad’s original Z Wreck was not harmed in the flood, but all of his road amps were destroyed. Dr Z quickly built 2 replacement Z Wrecks for Brad as the show must go on. This got him thinking…why should such a fine sounding amp be left only for one person to play? With encouragement from Brad to release the amp Dr Z went over the notes he and Ken had exchanged via fax. Dr Z took into account all of the layout and design tweaks he could incorporate and laid the amp out on a clean sheet of paper with an all new aluminum chassis and birch head cabinet.Every component on the Z Wreck was placed with the utmost attention to short wire lengths and increased separation between the front end and the output section. The heart of the amp is the output transformer designed by Ken for Dr Z in the early 2000s. Also on board is a newly designed power transformer which incorporates a multi tapped secondary that allows for 2 different plate voltage settings: Comfort and Speed. Speed yields a strong attack with increased clarity and dynamic headroom. Every note rings clear in the clean settings and they absolutely scream when the amp is pushed to its natural overdriven voice. The comfort setting drops the plate voltage down for more of a vintage feel. The softer response and overall sweetness of the comfort setting really make it difficult to put the guitar down. The touch response of the Z Wreck is unequalled. Settings below 12:00 on the volume yield a rich clean sound with no signs of harshness. A 12 string Ric will be right at home for mid 60s Liverpool bliss. Once past 12:00 on the volume you can dial in excellent crunch all the way up to full blooming sustained drive sounds. Does the Z Wreck ROCK? YES!!! Does the Z Wreck TWANG? YES!!! The Z Wreck will deliver exactly what your hands and guitar give it. With the amp volume past noon you can roll your guitar volume back for articulate full bodied clean sounds and turn it up full for excellent drive. The Z Wreck truly is a plug and play amp.You may be asking “why the matching 2×12 cab?” As stated earlier the Z Wreck was designed on a clean sheet of paper and the cab is no exception. The included 2×12 open back cab comes standard with a Celestion Blue and Celestion Gold wired in series at 16 ohms. This speaker combination in an open back 2×12 is the true voice of the Z Wreck.Other standard features include a matching set of covers from Studio Slips with the Z Wreck logo embroidered in the lower corner. Dr Z has acquired a massive amount of NOS Russian 6N14N-EV 7189 (EL84) tubes to use in the Z Wreck. These output tubes were chosen because of their superior sonic qualities and excellent life span. A speaker cable and AC cord are also included with the Z Wreck.SpecificationsPower Output30 WattsOutput Tubes4 -6N14N (EL84) Cathode BiasedPreamp Tubes3 -12AX7Rectifier1 – 5AR4ControlsVolume, Bass, Treble, CutConfigurationsQuantum Silver Set (Head & 2×12 Cab – Celestion Blue/Gold standard)NEW! The Dr. Z Z-Wreck is absolutely in a class to itself.
The Z-Wreck is the third collaboration between Dr. Z and Brad Paisley to create an amp with unparalled touch response and tone. To acheive this, Dr. Z worked together with Ken Fischer (of Trainwreck fame) on the circuit, which features a transformer designed by Ken for Dr. Z. The circuit was meticulously laid out with great attention to detail and minimal wire lengths to squeeze every bit of potential out of it. The result was nothing short of extraordinary! The amp has an amazing amount of clarity and cut, but not so much that its unforgiving. For such a high-end amp its very controllable, which is not always the case (such as with the Dr. Z Stingray). This allows the guitar player to easily determine the amout of bite and grit by the degree of his pick attack.
Dr Z also utilizes a specially designed power transformer that allows you to select two different tube plate voltages that gives you more control of your pick attack. These two setting are called Comfort and Speed. With the Comfort setting, you get a bit of a more vintage sag feel. The response is softer. With the Speed setting, the plate voltage is increased and you get a stronger attack with a bit more clarity and headroom. The notes ring clear absolutely scream when pushed into overdrive.
With the Z Wreck powered up and ready to rock, from the first chord it’s clear that we’re in for a real treat. There’s plenty of Vox-y character to this amp in terms of lively top end, but the rich, full and complex mid range is really something special. Every last drop of tone is rung out of those Alnico speakers and the transient response – the clarity of the initial note attack before it blooms into natural valve compression and sustain – is simply joyous."
Pre & Power Amp There’s a common thread running through many Dr Z designs, which tend to be single-channel amps with very few knobs. So it is with the Z Wreck, but as usual this apparent simplicity hides some considerable sophistication. Many people, ourselves included, believe that the most pure, direct and responsive valve tones are to be found in the most simple circuits, but the real magic is in the ne detail. Here we nd a single channel with a single input and controls for volume, treble, bass and cut. Looking around the rear, a pair of 12AX7s are used by the preamp, with a third in the phase splitter position. In the power amp, there’s a quartet of NOS Russian EL84s specially selected for the Z Wreck, while a 5AR4 recti er valve completes the line-up. A key feature of the amp is the output transformer, which was designed by Ken Fischer for Dr Z in the early noughties. Without wishing to exceed the limits of our own technical knowledge – it’s playing through amps that gets us excited, not building them – the output transformer is the part of the amp that takes signal ampli ed by the power valves and in turn drives the speaker, and it’s crucial in shaping the sound and response, or ‘feel,’ of the amp. Meanwhile, the power transformer (which takes AC mains power and turns it into thec orrect DC voltage required by thevalves) has a neat trick up its sleeve. e Z Wreck’s power transformer – which, we’re told, is a new design – has been tapped so that you can switch between two di erent plate voltages via a switch at the rear of the amp. ese settings are labelled ‘Comfort’ and ‘Speed’ (inspired, we sincerely hope, by the great Willie Dixon/Howlin’ Wolf number, ‘Built For Comfort’). e former is said to o er a softer, sweeter and altogether more vintage response, while the latter is the place to go for a stronger attack, more clarity and more headroom. Intriguing stu .
Sounds With the Z Wreck powered up and ready to rock, from the rst chord it’s clear that we’re in for a real treat. ere’s plenty of Vox-y character to this amp in terms of lively top end, but the rich, full and complex mid range is really something special. Every last drop of tone is rung out of those Alnico speakers and the transient response – the clarity of the initial note attack before it blooms into natural valve compression and sustain – is simply joyous. Plugging in a Telecaster, we can see why Brad Paisley is such a fan of this amp. e bridge pickup’s brightness and twang are here, along with huge dollops of meaty mid range snarl, but the highs never become sharp or unpleasant. Perhaps more surprising is how great this amp sounds with a Les Paul – chunkier than Leslie West, but still with that astonishing bite and clarity that makes each note seem to pop and shimmer. e cut and tone controls will be familiar to Dr Z fans and work as well as ever, though in reality the core tone is so good we can’t see anyone wanting to make extensive adjustments. With the volume knob set low, sparkling clean tones abound. As volume is increased, break-up comes on fairly quickly, but it’s a natural, organic overdrive that proves very responsive to dynamics. e Z Wreck is perhaps at its best with the volume around or a little past half way, where you can exploit its exceptional response to guitar’s volume knob. Rolling this back progressively cleans up the sound with little apparent loss in volume or high end. Even the neck pickup on our Les Paul remain clear-sounding down to 1 on the volume knob! Be aware that this is a loud gigging amp, though, and will reveal its best on stage, not at bedroom levels. e real ace in the hole is the ‘comfort/speed’ switch. Set to ‘comfort,’ the note attack is a little softer, the overdrive warmer and the overall feel is one of a smooth, rich-sounding and well worn-in vintage amp. Flicking over to ‘speed’ seems to bring up the bass and treble, without losing any mids, and gives a tighter feel. We can see this facility being incredibly useful when it comes to delivering the tone you want at the volume level you want with the particular guitar you’re using. Dr Z Air Brake AttenuatorThe Z Air Brake has two major applications. One is for stage use, the other is for studio or home use.For stage use, the Z Air Brake is a useful tool to limit your overall dB level at any time during a performance. Example: the beginning of the night (when the club isn’t full) click the Air Brake to a level of attenuation to allow for smooth tone at a lower volume level. As the night progresses, reach back and remove degrees of attenuation until the desired level is reached. This will allow you to manage your amp’s overall volume without varying from your amp’s favorite settings. At home, the Air Brake is useful for lower volume while still allowing for full output tube distortion. The Air Brake has a “bedroom” level control that, when selected, will allow for fine adjustment and maximum attenuation down to 1 watt (with amps less than 100 watts.)Top ControlsAttenuator: This is a rotary switch that selects the amount of attenuaton. 0 positon is true bypass. Positons 1-4 adds 1.8 dB of attenuaton per click.Bedroom Level: A rheostat that will adjust the amp’s output from -7.2 dB down to -30 dB.
