Product Description
"Celestion G12K-100 question"
Based on this thread, I emailed Celestion directly, and asked if they were the same speaker. Heres my email (skipping the quoted part of the above thread) and their reply:
"I am writing to verify the following message, reportedly from Celestion:
[omitting quote from above thread, reportedly from Celestion]
I read this to say that the G12K-85 is essentially the same as the G12K-100; and that the G12K-85 reacts under 100W of power as well as any G12K-100. It says that only the model number was changed. Apparently the G12K-85s were capable of more than the 85W they were originally marketed for. Is this true? I have some G12K-85s to sell on eBay; and I want to advertize them as 100W speakers. Would this be a fair assessment?
TIA,
John C."
Their reply was:
"Hello John –
Yes, that would be a fair assessment – the G12K-85 was essentially “re-graded” as a 100-watt speaker around 15 years ago and became the G12K-100.

Thus, the G12K-85 is the same as the G12K-100 - it was just regraded for 100W. This from Celestion itself. Dont believe me? email them. A reply only took a few days.
All are manufactured on the same date; and may be ordered together as two or three speakers, to better match them. On the other hand, any of these should make a good substitute for any G12K-85s or G12K-100s from the late 1980s or early 1990s; assuming the other(s) have been broken in, which these have. As they have only been used with 100W heads, they have never been driven close to their capacity - and should be in pretty good shape from a mechanical and electrical point of view.
The date code is: CY26. This corresponds to March 26, 1990.
Ive found it challenging to find specs on these speakers, but since they are the same as the G12K-100, Ill just quote the specs of one, followed by adjustments for the 16Ω speaker Ive made in parentheses:
Power rating: 100W rms
Nominal impedance: 8Ω (16Ω)Sensitivity: 99dBChassis type: Pressed steelVoice coil diameter: 1.75", 44.5mmVoice coil material: Round copperMagnet type: CeramicMagnet weight: 50oz, 1.42kgFrequency range: 80-5500HzResonance frequency, Fs: 85HzDC resistance: 7Ω (13Ω, measured by myself)
Note that these are vintage speakers made in entirely England, unlike the 2001+ "Made In England" Celestions, whose baskets are actually made in China. A guitar teacher of mine warns me that the latter are made from much softer, low-carbon steel which can deform under the weight of the magnets; and should thus be avoided. By contrast, these are entirely pre-Chinese speakers.
These have seen light to moderate studio use, and at most, two gigs. Four of these will get you 400W of raw power handling capacity; without that new speaker harshness, but with vintage workmanship. All three have been tested and sound great.
